The North Atlantic Treaty Organization
About NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO)is a union of 31 nations from Europe and North America that acts as a military and political alliance. NATO was established in 1949 with the purpose of defending the citizens and national borders of its members. In accordance with the collective defence principle, which states that if one NATO ally is attacked, all NATO allies are also attacked, an alliance is formed. As an illustration, all NATO Allies stood behind America after the 9/11 terrorist attacks as if they too had been assaulted. NATO is crucial in the fight against terrorism. NATO providing advice and assistance to the Iraqi security forces and institutions through NATO Mission Iraq in order to help them fight terrorism, stabilise their nation, and stop the resurgence of Daesh. Our AWACS surveillance planes have been a key ally in the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, of which NATO is a full part. NATO contributed to preventing Afghanistan from turning into a refuge for foreign terrorists for almost 20 years. To assist Allies in combating the threat of terrorism, NATO has established a "Hub for the South" in Naples. NATO is committed to working with its international allies since dangers and problems like terrorism, migration, climate change, and cyberattacks have no regard for national boundaries. To promote peace and security, NATO collaborates with more than 40 partner nations worldwide as well as institutions like the African Union, the European Union, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and the United Nations. NATO members provide troops and equipment to be placed under NATO command whenever NATO conducts a mission. They are referred to as "NATO forces." NATO's only military assets are a fleet of AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control) surveillance planes and a number of Global Hawk drones.

As the world becomes more digital, cyber-terrorism stands out as a major security concern for NATO. These cyber-attacks can threaten essential infrastructure, expose confidential information, and weaken national defences, affecting both military and civilian spheres. Recent incidents, such as the USA’s Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack, cyber attacks targeting Estonia's government websites, the persistent cyber campaigns against crucial infrastructure in Poland and Lithuania, and attacks on election systems in multiple NATO countries, show the escalating threat. With cyber-terrorists growing in skill and capability, it is the responsibility of NATO member states to safeguard against these evolving threats.

Director
As a junior at Richmond Christian School, Caitlin is delighted to serve as Director of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. From closing down hospitals in WHO to defending constant arms production to her assassination count of three, Caitlin’s journey in Model UN has been filled with treasured moments. Engrossed in a web of debate and diplomacy, MUN has enhanced Caitlin’s ability to talk in circles. Outside of the committee rooms, Caitlin can be found painstakingly stacking shuttles on the badminton court, furiously tapping at Geometry Dash, and completing word games all by herself. Caitlin is incredibly excited to meet everyone and looks forward to productive committee sessions!

Chair
Going into grade 10 at Semiahmoo Secondary, Dilreet is grateful to be serving as the Chair of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization for this iteration of SPAMUN. Having started Model UN 2 years ago, and after many 10 second speeches, Dilreet has grown to enjoy the rigorous debate and collaboration it has to offer. Beyond diplomatic pursuits, Dilreet can be found rewatching a TV show, taking pointless naps, and spending an unhealthy amount of time playing GeoGuesser. She hopes to make NATO an enjoyable experience for all delegates, and looks forward to meeting everyone!

Assistant Director
As a grade 11 student at Southpointe Academy, Aanam is ecstatic to serve as the Assistant Director of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization for this iteration of Spamun. With his first conference being Spamun in 2023, and with a grand total of one speech done, Aanam had since developed a fiery passion for Mun for its constant debating and collaboration. Outside of the conference, Aanam can be seen spending countless hours watching his favorite films, procrastinating on school work until the last minute, and working tirelessly on his writing. Aanam hopes to make Nato a wonderful experience for all in the 2024 iteration of Spamun.
